How does it work?
The infrared sauna wavelengths penetrate soft tissue up to an inch and a half, warming the body and opening blood vessels in a process called “vasodilation.”

Is it safe?
Infrared is so safe it is regularly used in hospitals to keep new born babies warm.

Infrared and infrared saunas have been researched and studied for decades.  There are even specific hospital insurance billing codes for infrared because of the research that underpins the importance of this therapy for patients.  Doctors, chiropractors and physiotherapist use infrared every day in clinics and hospitals around the world to alleviate pain, heal skin conditions, increase flexibility and generally help heal the body.

  • Detoxification
Infrared saunas can help increase blood circulation and stimulate the sweat glands, releasing built-up toxins in the body.  Daily sauna sweating can help detoxify the body as it releases heavy metals (lead, mercury, nickel, and cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sulfuric acid and other organic and inorganic compounds.

  • Stress Fatigue
Not surprisingly, saunas can also reduce stress and anxiety.  Just a few minutes in the gentle warmth of an infrared sauna will help one feel relaxed, rejuvenated and renewed.

Several studies have shown that regular sauna use lowers levels of cortisol, your body’s main stress hormone.

  • Depression
Saunas can really help people that struggle with depression.  Saunas are fairly stressful on the body, so in response your brain produces and releases more euphoric hormones to deal with it.  These changes appear to be semi-permanent so if you use a sauna regularly you'll end up becoming much happier.

  • Saunas Increase Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Helping Mental Illness
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a naturally-occurring protein in the brain that lowers your risk of mental disease and improves your mood. It does this by protecting and repairing your brain cells and increasing the growth of new brain cells.  Research shows that heat exposure increases BDNF.

  • Muscle Aches, Arthritis and Joint Pain
Infrared saunas can help relieve inflammation, stiffness and soreness by increasing blood circulation and allowing the deep, penetrating infrared heat to relax muscles and carry off metabolic waste products, while delivering oxygen-rich blood to the muscles for a faster recovery.  Infrared helps warm the muscles for greater flexibility and range of motion, while relieving muscle tension and pain.

  • Saunas Help Treat Fibromyalgia
Beta-endorphins are pain-relieving compounds that originate within your body.  Your brain produces and releases these natural painkillers during times of strenuous exercise, emotional stress and pain.  Since saunas are a stressor, the release of endorphins are increased when you spend time in one.

Several studies have shown that heat stress and heat exposure in a dry sauna cause a significant increase in beta-endorphin levels.  In one study, people with fibromyalgia experienced a 33 - 77 per cent reduction in pain after using an infrared sauna regularly. Six months after the study was done, the participants still reported a 28 - 66 per cent reduction in pain.

  • Saunas Increase Norepinephrine Levels and May Help Treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Numerous studies have found that sauna use significantly increases norepinephrine levels, which help with focus and attention.  In one study, women spent 20 minutes in a sauna, two times each week and researchers witnessed an 86% increase in norepinephrine.

Medications that increase the re-uptake of norepinephrine are often prescribed to people with ADHD, so researchers believe that sauna therapy should be considered as an alternative treatment.

  • Saunas help with Brain Fog
Saunas encourage the Growth of Myelin.  Myelin is a fatty, white substance that wraps around the end of many nerve cells.  It forms an electrically insulating sheath that increases nerve condition speeds.  In other words, it allows your brain to send information faster and more efficiently, making it absolutely essential for the optimal functioning of your nervous system.

Heat stress increases prolactin, a hormone that promotes the production of myelin.  In one study, women spent 20 minutes in a sauna, twice each week, and researchers witnessed a 510% increase in prolactin.

  • Weight loss and increased metabolism
An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association has stated that regular use of an infrared sauna imparts a similar boost to the cardiovascular system as running. While relaxing in the gentle infrared heat, the body is producing sweat, pumping blood and burning calories.  A 30-minute infrared sauna session can burn somewhere between 300–800 calories.

  • Immune system support
The penetrating infrared wavelengths from infrared saunas raises the core body temperature, inducing an artificial fever. A fever is the body’s mechanism to strengthen and accelerate the immune response, as seen in the case of infection.  This enhances the immune system, and combined with the improved elimination of toxins and wastes via intense sweating, it can increase overall health and resistance to disease.

  • Skin conditions
The intense sweating achieved after just a few minutes in a sauna carries off deeply embedded  toxins, impurities and dead skin cells, leaving the skin glowing and clean. Increased circulation draws the skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface for a natural glow.

  • Heart health
A study at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver found that infrared sauna therapy can help keep blood pressure within healthy levels, lower cholesterol, reduce chronic pain and be of therapeutic value to patients with chronic congestive heart disease (CHD).

In an infrared sauna, your heart rate increases and blood vessels dilate, allowing oxygen to enter the cells of your body more easily.

  • Appearance of cellulite
Infrared heat increases heart rate and localised blood circulation, which essentially reverses the  superficial pockets of trapped fat, to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

  • Diabetes support
Infrared sauna therapy can aid and support those managing diabetes because it helps decrease side effects in the following ways:
  • Toxin elimination
  • Improved circulation
  • Internal organ cleanse
  • Infrared resonance

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
People struggling with this disorder not only have unrelenting fatigue, but also memory and concentration deficits, sleep disturbances, headaches, joint and muscle pain and gastrointestinal and immune system dysfunction.

One study found that infrared sauna sessions significantly reduce fatigue in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. It also significantly reduced their anxiety and depression.  Although it is common for doctors to recommended Chronic Fatigue Patients stay out of the sun and avoid exposing themselves to too much heat, the above study didn't find any negative effects in chronic fatigue patients from regular infrared sauna sessions.

  • Saunas Help Eliminate Heavy Metals
Many people don’t sweat very much, and this can cause problems.  Lack of sweating may actually result in increased toxic load over time, which can negatively affect your brain and mental health.  Your skin should act as an important route of detoxification and help you excrete heavy metals that are so prevalent in your modern environment some of which are cadmium, arsenic, lead and mercury.

Research has shown that mercury poisoning from dental amalgam has various ill effects and plays a role in the development of mental illness  By sweating frequently in a sauna, you can enhance your detoxification pathways and help your body remove harmful heavy metals.

  • Some of the adverse health effects of heavy metals:
  • Mental Confusion
  • Memory Loss
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Heart Problems
  • Skin Rashes
  • Immune Dysfunction
  • Cold Feet
  • Balance Problems
  • Joint Stiffness
  • Weight Gain
  • Digestion Problems
  • Hight Blood Pressure
  • Allergies

  • Supports Thyroid Function
Considerable research shows that thyroid dysfunction can contribute to mental health problems. One of the main threats to the health of your thyroid is non-biological halogens. These include bromine, fluorine, chlorine, and perchlorate, which are often found in tap water.  Your thyroid soaks up the halogens and they inhibit the production of your thyroid hormones, and contribute to thyroid dysfunction.

Infrared sauna use can help your body excrete halogens which will re-enable your body to produce thyroid hormones.

  • Reduces Malignant Cancer Cells
For cancer, infrared sauna treatments are exceptionally promising because of the selective toxicity they have on cells. In a nutshell, the hyper thermic effects of infrared radiation are only harmful to malignant cells as was explained by Dr. Irvin Sahni in "A Truth About Cancer" docu series interview.  Dr. Sahni explained that normal healthy cells are essentially immune to infrared radiation, while cancer cells are hyper-thermically challenged.

“…by exposing your body to that heat, you’re selectively killing or eradicating those less viable cells, those cancer cells, without hurting your normal cells.  And so a far infrared sauna is useful because it can help you sweat, excrete toxins, and in theory eliminate cancer cells which can’t survive the heat as well as the normal cells.”

Another study published in the Journal of Cancer Science and Therapy found that after just 30 days of infrared treatment, tumour-infected mice saw reductions in their cancerous masses of up to 86% − even with low-temperature infrared exposures of as little as 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 Celsius).

And if that isn’t enough, another study out of Japan found that infrared-induced, whole-body hyperthermia helped strongly inhibit the growth and spread of breast cancer cells in mice, without causing any harmful side effects.

  • Stimulates the Autonomic Nervous System
Infrared saunas have been shown to affect the autonomic nervous system by putting the user in the parasympathetic state, allowing the body to heal and restore itself.

  •  Precautions or Negative Effects
There are no reported negative effects so far beyond the cautions about any sauna experience. These include the possibilities of overheating, dehydrating, and interference with medication, as well as the potential dangers for those who are pregnant or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, among others.

The good news: Even if, in your case, your sweat session doesn’t do all of the things that have worked for others, at least it still feels good. Plus, it contributes to your overall health and well-being by helping you relax, loosening up stiff or tight muscles, reducing joint pain, and giving you some much needed time to yourself.

In a recent study done by NASA it was found that near infrared light absorbed by the cells stimulated the metabolism in muscle and bone as well as skin and subcutaneous tissue.  This promotes faster wound healing and human tissue growth because infrared light stimulates basic energy processes in the mitochondria of each cell.
